"Elaine's review showed me exactly where the book was getting in its own way, and how to fix it without losing what mattered most. Her feedback was clear, specific, and deeply respectful of the work."

    What I Assess

A developmental review looks at the architecture of your book, not line-by-line editing. The question I'm holding throughout is whether the manuscript meets its reader the way you want it to. The review is grounded in three strands of adult learning theory, humanistic, transformative, and cognitive load, so the assessment goes beyond craft into how well the book actually teaches.

    Premise & Promise

Is the book's central premise clear from the opening pages? Does it deliver, in full, on what it promises the reader?

    Structure & Pacing

Is the book built so each chapter earns the next? Does the pacing give the reader room to absorb the work?

    Voice & Trust

Does your real voice come through on the page? Does the tone build the kind of trust your subject asks for?

    Reader Experience

Where might the reader drift, feel lost, or feel pushed? Where is the cognitive load too heavy, and where are they being held well?

    Depth & Clarity

Is the depth of your practice on the page? And is it being made clear without being flattened?

    Impact

What does the reader walk away with? Does the book create the genuine shift transformative learning theory describes, and does it feel finished, considered, and worth recommending?

    Is This Right for You?

A developmental review is designed for a specific stage in the writing.

    This is for you if...

    • You have a completed first draft of a non-fiction book in mental health, wellbeing, or personal growth
    • You want a senior editorial read before the book goes any further
    • You're willing to revise so the book truly meets its reader
    • You care as much about how the book holds the reader as about what it says
    • You're considering approaching publishers or moving into a considered self-publishing process

    This isn't for you if...

    • ×Your manuscript is still incomplete
    • ×You're looking for line editing or proofreading
    • ×You're writing fiction or memoir without a wider message
    • ×You're not open to significant developmental feedback
    • ×You're looking for validation rather than an honest read

    Common Questions

How long does the review take?

Usually two to three weeks from when I receive your manuscript, depending on length and current workload. I'll confirm a specific timeline when we begin.

What's the difference between developmental editing and copy editing?

Developmental editing looks at the architecture: structure, voice, pacing, and reader experience. Copy editing focuses on sentence-level clarity and consistency. Most authors need developmental feedback first, then copy editing closer to publication.

    How is pricing decided?

Pricing is based on your manuscript's word count. Send me your manuscript and I'll come back with a specific quote within 24 hours.

Will you be honest, even if the feedback is hard to hear?

Yes, and gently so. Your name is on this book and your reader is real. My job is to be honest about what will help the work land, while being respectful of how much of you is in it.

What if I need help implementing the changes?

Many authors work through revisions independently using the report. If you'd like more support, we can talk about follow-up sessions or moving into a fuller partnership.
